Crab Tree Falls, Nelson County, VA, 2011, April
Crabtree Falls, the highest vertical-drop cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River, is approximately 1 hour & 15 mins. from Charlottesville, on a scenic drive through southern Albemarle and Nelson Counties. Crabtree Falls is actually a series of five major cascades and a number of smaller ones that fall a total distance of 1,200 feet. The first overlook is a few hundred feet from the upper parking lot and is reached by a paved trail that is easy to walk. The 4 remaining overlooks are at strategic places on a moderately difficult vertical 1 1/2 mile dirt, rocky trail with steps, railings at certain places, and 9 switchbacks. Sturdy hiking boots and water is highly recommended. The falls are named after William Crabtree, who settled in the area in 1777. http://nelsoncounty.com/visit/crabtreefalls/ http://www.virginiawind.com/virginia_travel/crabtree_falls.asp
